Top 5 causes of knee pain active adults population in Malaysia by Orthopaedic surgeon Dr Sanjiv rampal
Knee pain remains a common complaint in outpatient clinic .The pain is usually mild and self resolving.
In middle-aged men in Malaysia, knee pain is often due to a mix of lifestyle, physical activity, and degenerative factors. Here are five common causes:
- Osteoarthritis: This is one of the leading causes of knee pain in middle-aged and older adults. Due to wear and tear on the knee joint cartilage, it leads to pain, swelling, and stiffness. High humidity and hot weather may exacerbate joint pain for some people.
- Meniscus Tears: The meniscus is a cartilage cushion between the thigh and shin bones. Injuries or degeneration of this tissue can cause knee pain, particularly with activities like squatting or twisting. Degenerative tears are more common in middle-aged adults.
- Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (Runner’s Knee): Often caused by overuse, poor alignment, or muscle imbalances, this condition leads to pain around or behind the kneecap. Running, climbing stairs, and prolonged sitting can aggravate it.
- Ligament Injuries: The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) or medial collateral ligament (MCL) are prone to injury, especially in active individuals or those who engage in sports. These injuries are typically due to sudden twisting or impact and can cause knee instability.
- Gout or Pseudogout: These are types of arthritis caused by the buildup of crystals in the joint, leading to sudden and intense knee pain, swelling, and redness. Gout is linked to diet and lifestyle, and Malaysia’s diet, which can be high in purines, might contribute to increased gout cases.
If the knee pain persists, a visit to an orthopedic specialist is recommended to determine the cause and receive a suitable treatment plan.
