Tennis Elbow 3 Common Symptoms in Malaysian Racquet Sports by Dr Sanjiv Rampal 2026

Not a Tennis Pro? You Can Still Get “Tennis Elbow

Hello again, KL! You’d be surprised how many patients I see with Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis) who haven’t picked up a racket in years. Whether you’re a weekend warrior on the court, a hardcore “keyboard athlete,” or a master of the kitchen wok, your elbow tendons can only take so much repetitive stress.

Here are the Top 3 symptoms that suggest your elbow is staging a protest:

  1. The “Outer Edge” Ache
The most classic sign is pain centered on the bony bump on the outside of your elbow.

The Sensation: It usually starts as a dull nag and turns into a sharp “ouch!” when you touch that specific spot.

Pro-tip: If the pain is on the inside of the elbow, that’s “Golfer’s Elbow”—different club, same frustration!

  1. The “Weak Handshake”
Have you noticed your grip feels a bit… uninspired? Tennis elbow can make simple hand movements surprisingly difficult.

Why? The muscles that extend your wrist attach right at that painful elbow spot. When they are inflamed, your brain tells your hand to “let go” to prevent more pain.

  1. The “Morning Coffee” Struggle
Pain that flares up during everyday twisting or lifting movements:

The Culprits: Turning a doorknob, opening a tight jar of sambal, or even lifting your morning mug of Teh Tarik.

The Sign: If these “heavy lifting” moments (that aren’t actually heavy) make you wince, your tendons are likely overworked.

Dr. Sanjiv’s Advice: Most cases of Tennis Elbow respond brilliantly to rest, proper ergonomics, and targeted physiotherapy. You don’t have to “play through the pain”—in fact, please don’t!

If your elbow is making daily life feel like a five-set match, let’s get it sorted so you can get back to your routine.
