Keeping Your Game Strong!
Commonest Racquet Players’ Shoulder Injuries in Active Adults
By Dr. Sanjiv Rampal, Orthopaedic Consultant KL.
Hello to all our active Uncles, Aunties, and weekend warriors! Are you still hitting those powerful smashes in tennis or squash? Steady lah! But wait… is your shoulder starting to feel a bit “merajuk” (grumpy)? As we get more “mature,” our shoulders need a bit of extra care to keep us on the court.
Dr. Sanjiv Rampal shares the top 2 shoulder problems we see in active adults and how you can stay “fit and sharp”:
The “Top 2” Court Culprits
Rotator Cuff Wear & Tear (The Overused Urat)
What is it? Think of your rotator cuff like the strings on your racquet. After thousands of serves, they can get frayed or even snap.
The Feeling: A dull ache deep in the shoulder or weakness when you try to lift your arm to reach the top shelf (or for that overhead smash!).
Shoulder Impingement (The “Pinching” Pain)
What is it? This is when the bones in your shoulder “pinch” the soft tissues every time you lift your arm.
The Feeling: A sharp “Zapp!” pain, especially during your serve or when reaching behind your back to grab your bag.
✅ Prevention: Don’t Just “Tahan” the Pain!
Don’t wait for it to become a “big problem.” Follow these simple tips to jaga your shoulder:
Warm-up is Compulsory!: Don’t just step onto the court and start smashing. Spend 5-10 mins doing arm circles and light stretches. Get the “enjin” warm first!
Strengthen the “Base”: Use light resistance bands (the rubber ones) to strengthen the small muscles around your shoulder blade. A stable base means a stronger hit!
Check Your Gear: Is your racquet too heavy? Is the grip too small? Sometimes, small changes in your equipment can save your joints.
Listen to Your Body: If the pain keeps you awake at night or doesn’t go away with rest, don’t just use “minyak angin.” Come and get it checked by a professional!
Stay Active, Stay Happy!
Let’s keep playing the sports we love without the pain. See you on the court!
