Common fractures seen in Clinic Malaysia By Dr sanjiv Rampal Orthoapedic Consultant Malaysia

🦴 “Is it just a sprain?” — What we see most at the clinic!
Accidents happen in a split second—a trip in the garden, a finger caught in a door, or a slip in the kitchen. But did you know that nearly half of all fractures we see in primary care involve the hands and wrists?
According to clinical data (see the table below for a deeper dive), the most common “breaks” we treat are:
1️⃣ Fingers (17%)
2️⃣ Hand bones (Metacarpals – 16%)
3️⃣ The Wrist (Radius – 14%)
4️⃣Toe

Clinical Insight: Where Breaks Happen Most in Primary Care
🩹 What to do immediately (The P.R.I.C.E. Rule):
Knowing these initial steps can significantly reduce pain and prevent further injury while you seek professional medical care:

• Protect: Stop using the limb immediately.

• Rest: Avoid any movement that causes pain.

• Ice: Apply a cold pack (wrapped in a towel) for 15 minutes to reduce swelling.

• Compress: Wrap the area gently with an elastic bandage.

•Elevate: Keep the injured area raised above your heart level.

When to see a doctor right away:
While many small fractures are managed at our clinic, you should always consult a doctor immediately or visit urgent care if:

• The limb looks crooked, bent, or “out of place.”

• You have persistent numbness or a “pins and needles” sensation.

•  The pain is severe and not managed by basic rest and OTC medication.

• You cannot move the joint at all.
Stay safe, everyone! If you’re unsure about an injury, it’s always better to get an X-ray than to “tough it out.”
