Rotator Cuff Injuries Home remedies and When to See a Doctor by Dr Sanjiv Rampal Orthopaedic specialist Kuala Lumpur 2026
Don’t Let Shoulder Pain Sideline Your Game.
Hello everyone! Whether you’re smashing a serve on the tennis court or pivoting for a shot in futsal, your shoulders are doing a lot of the heavy lifting. One of the most common issues I see in active young adults is a Rotator Cuff injury.
Think of your rotator cuff as the “steering team” for your shoulder—a group of four muscles and tendons that keep your arm bone centered in its socket. When they get overworked or pinched, it can really throw off your game.
Home Remedies: The “First Response”
If you’ve felt a sudden twinge or a nagging ache after a match, don’t panic. You can start the recovery process right at home:
●Relative Rest: This doesn’t mean stopping all movement, but do avoid overhead activities (like serving or overhead smashes) that aggravate the pain.
●Ice is Your Friend: Apply an ice pack for 15-20 minutes every few hours during the first 48 hours to bring down swelling.
●Gentle Pendulums: Lean over a table, let your arm hang loosely, and gently swing it in small circles. This keeps the joint from getting “frozen” without straining the tendons.
●Sleep Posture: Try not to sleep on the painful side. Propping your arm up with a pillow can often take the pressure off.
●When to Step Off the Court & See a Specialist
Home care is great for minor strains, but some injuries need a professional “tune-up” to prevent long-term damage. You should see a doctor if:
●The “Night Ache”: The pain is sharp enough to wake you up or prevents you from falling asleep.
●Weakness, Not Just Pain: You find it physically difficult to lift your arm to comb your hair or reach into a cupboard.
●No Progress: You’ve rested for 7–10 days and the pain hasn’t budged.
●The “Pop”: You felt a distinct snapping or popping sensation followed by immediate weakness during a game.
Why Get it Checked?
In my practice, we focus on getting you back to the sports you love. Early intervention—whether through specialized physiotherapy or advanced imaging—is the fastest way to ensure a small tear doesn’t become a big problem.
Stay active, play smart, and listen to your body!
