Malaysia’s First Robotic-Assisted Total Knee Replacement Surgery in Government University Hospital by Dr. Sanjiv Rampal and team March 2023

10 February 2023,Serdang-
Dr Sanjiv Rampal’s orthopaedic unit completed robotic-assisted total knee replacement surgery at Hospital Pengajar Universiti Putra Malaysia (HPUPM) or HSAAS Hospital Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah last week. This was the first time that an ex-government servant patient was able to get robotic knee surgery where the surgery and surgical implant were cleared by JPA (Jabatan Perkhidmatan Amam).
One of the assistant surgeons for the operation stated that the project has received JPA’s endorsement which was the first in a government university hospital for the said procedure. Despite the higher cost of the robotic device compared to conventional machines, its advantages lie in providing greater precision during surgery compared to the conventional technique that relies on the surgeon’s visual acuity. The robotic machine can reduce errors as it can provide more precise indications and guide the surgeon down to the tissue level. Both of the assistant surgeons have participated in the orthopaedic department at HPUPM and were privileged to be a part of such a significant event.

The patient, suffering from left knee pain for the past 3 years, is now satisfied and relieved after the successful procedure. She is scheduled to have the same surgery on her other knee in September. Even though the robotic procedure may be unfamiliar to the public, the patient has full confidence in the staff’s experience at HPUPM. She expresses her heartfelt gratitude for the excellent care she received during her 2-day stay in the ward and emphasizes that she experienced no pain throughout the procedure. She also advises other patients dealing with knee pain to seek treatment as soon as possible and consider total knee replacement surgery if clinical treatment fails to provide relief.
